Dr. Debra Hamer is an Assistant Professor and Shared-Care psychiatrist at Queen’s University. She completed her Honors Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Semiotics and Communication Theory at the University of Toronto, before pursuing medical training at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. Her psychiatry residency was completed at the University of Toronto.
Since being hired to Queen’s University as a clinician-educator, she has been actively involved in teaching both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. She is currently the acting Director of the Psychiatry Clerkship Course.
Her research has focused on the integration of humanities into medical education, as well as physician wellness. For her contribution to medical education, she has received numerous awards. These include at the international level, the Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) Early Career Development Award (2023) and AAP Fellowship Award (2014), as well as at the provincial PARO Resident Teaching Award (2014). She has also been recognized at Queen’s University with the 2019 Queen’s Department of Psychiatry Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Aesculapian Society Lectureship Award (2021 and 2022) and the prestigious W. Ford Connell Award for Excellence in Mentorship from the School of Medicine (2021 and 2023).
Most recently, Dr. Hamer has been announced as the 2024 winner of the Canadian Association of Medical Education Meridith Marks New Educator Award. This award is a significant honor as its given to one individual each year in Canada who has made a significant contribution to medical education early in their career.
