Nicholas Axas received his BSW from the Metropolitan State University of Denver, and his MSW from the University of Denver; he has been working with children and their families for over 20 years as a case-manager, trainer, clinician and therapist. He immigrated to Canada in 2006 where he worked as a Clinical Therapist with the SAFE-T Program at Thistletown Regional Centre in Toronto. During this time, Nicholas received a number of awards from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services in Partnership, Innovation and Creativity.
Nicholas joined the Child and Youth Mental Health Urgent Consult Clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH) in Kingston ON in 2012 as the Social Worker/Team Leader for the clinic, and was awarded the HDH Mission Award in 2014 due to his work with patients and their families. In 2017 he became Program Manager for Ambulatory Mental Health & Addiction Services, Social Work and Telemedicine at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). He is also an adjunct lecturer for the School of Medicine at Queen’s University in the Department of Psychiatry.
Nicholas has published a number of articles on bullying, indigenous youth mental health needs, and telemedicine services in mental health. He has also presented on a variety topics at conferences locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. He often lectures on topics related to child welfare, child development, risk assessment, GLBTQ issues, social determinants of health and child and youth mental health. He is fluent in Greek and English.
