I received my university education and training in psychiatry at Queen’s University (MD 1975, FRCPC 1979). My clinical practice has been in general adult psychiatry, and I currently work with the North Shore Assertive Community Treatment Team at Addictions and Mental Health Services – Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington. I have been involved in administration, teaching, and research. I served as the last Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital from 1998 to 2001. I was the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University/Chief of the Department of Psychiatry, Capital District Health Authority from 2006 to 2016, and am now an Emeritus Professor at Dalhousie. My areas of academic interest include psychopharmacology, electroconvulsive therapy, primary polydipsia, mood disorders, psychosis, headache, history of psychiatry, philosophy, and medical assistance in dying. I am a member of the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and the Journal of ECT.
