Dr. Debra Hamer is an Assistant Professor and Shared-Care psychiatrist at Queen’s University. She completed her Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in Semiotics and Communication Theory at the University of Toronto, before pursuing medical training at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. Her psychiatry residency was completed at the University of Toronto.
At Queen’s University, Dr. Hamer is known for being a dynamic and innovative clinician-educator, she has been actively involved in teaching both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. For eight years, she held the position of Director of the Psychiatry Clerkship Course and more recently was promoted to the role of Clerkship Director for the MD Program, Queen’s University.
Her research has focused on the integration of humanities into medical education, as well as physician wellness. For her contribution to medical education, she has received numerous awards at the regional, provincial, national, and international level; most notably the prestigious Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) Early Career Development Award (2023) and the Canadian Association of Medical Education (CAME) Meridith Marks New Educator Award (2024) awarded annually to one physician in Canada who shows the most promise as an early-career educator.
