About the Division
The Division of Mood Disorders provides comprehensive assessment and specialized time-limited psychiatric care for people living with and at risk of mood disorders—among the most common and disabling mental disorders. Our services are person-centered, flexible, and designed to meet both individual, family, and community needs.
We are committed to excellence in clinical care, education, research, and collaboration across hospital, academic, and community settings. Our team fosters interdisciplinary partnerships and provides high-quality, inclusive care for people with emerging, established, and hard-to-treat mood disorders. Our priorities are threefold:
- Delivering specialized, comprehensive psychiatric assessments and, when indicated, time-limited, evidence-based treatment for adults (18+) with mood disorders. Services include consultation for first-episode mood disorders, diagnostic clarification, second opinions, and evaluation of atypical or complex presentations and are designed to address a broad range of mood concerns.
- Rapidly translating scientific advances into novel interventions that can be incorporated into routine clinical care and evaluating our own practice for continual improvement
- Serving as a centre of excellence for knowledge translation through curriculum development and education for learners and clinicians.
Our services are located at Providence Care Hospital, and include (1) virtual and in-person (2) outpatient, (3) inpatient, and (4) interventional psychiatry programs. Care is delivered by interdisciplinary teams, integrating pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and brain stimulation treatments within a recovery-oriented framework that promotes well-being and supports reintegration into the community.
Programs
- Virtual Psychiatry Post-Secondary Student Mood Disorders Program is tailored to facilitate rapid access and provide timely, specialized comprehensive assessments and when indicated time-limited collaborative care for referred individuals at risk or in the early course of a mood disorder (i.e. depression, bipolar disorder).
- Interventional Psychiatry Program (IVP) serves a broad region, providing advanced, evidence-based treatments for severe and treatment-resistant mood disorders. Our dedicated electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) clinic operates daily with a specialized interdisciplinary team to ensure timely, high-quality care. The program also offers innovative therapies, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and intravenous or intranasal esketamine for eligible patients.
