Dr. Rafael Freire is an Academic Psychiatrist and Associate Professor in the Adult Division of the Department of Psychiatry at Queen's University. He is also a member of the Centre for Neuroscience Studies (CNS) at Queen's University and a member of the Kingston General Hospital Research Institute (KGHRI) at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). In addition, Dr. Freire is the Clinical Lead for the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry service in KHSC, the Fellowship Director for the Department of Psychiatry and the Lead of Queen's University Anxiety Research Lab (QAnxiety). He also participates in editorial activities including working as associated editor in Frontiers in Psychiatry and editorial board member of International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry, Clinical Practice & Epidemiology in Mental Health and Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria.
After completing medical school and residency in psychiatry, Dr. Freire completed a MSc and a PhD in clinical psychiatry. He became a professor at the Department of Psychiatry of the Medical School of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 2013. He left UFRJ and joined the Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University in April, 2019.
Dr. Freire has experience in clinical practice, research and teaching in the field of psychiatry. His clinical practice is focused on adult psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, mood and anxiety disorders. Most of his research and publications are on anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and mood disorders. His research interests also include psychopharmacology and neurostimulation.
