Welcome to the Department

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University, located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. We are a medium sized department, with dedicated and supportive members, a friendly atmosphere and high professional satisfaction. Our department is an emerging center of excellence for developing clinical expertise through a “hands-on” community interprofessional and collaborative care focus.

The Department provides a wide array of clinical services: from those delivered in hospital to those delivered in the community, with a strong emphasis on shared care; from services for children and adolescents to the elderly; from urgent and acute to highly specialized, including rehabilitation services; from group and individual psychotherapy to neuropsychopharmacology and cutting edge treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Using best practice models and evidence-based treatment approaches is a main goal within the department.

Teaching is one of the major strengths of the Department and has a long history and traditions. We have well-established undergraduate and postgraduate programs and accept 5 postgraduate residents every year. Our strength comes from the opportunities for close, personal interaction between students and faculty members and for students to obtain particularly relevant, extensive, hands-on clinical experience. There is great potential for students to benefit from the integration of the clinical and basic sciences in the curriculum and from increased collaboration in education among the clinical disciplines. We also create and deliver a wide array of continuing professional development programs.

Apart from a diverse and clinically focused staff the department also has a number of highly regarded research programs including autism research, mood disorders, sleep disorders, schizophrenia and geriatric psychiatry to mention just a few. The majority of these research programs are closely rooted in the existing clinical work that the department undertakes day-to-day.

While our Department has a distinguished research record, we are focused on developing the best clinical practitioners in Canada. We work with an interdisciplinary collaborative care model in helping integrate patients into our community with extremely positive results. With the Department faculty members working at all of our regional institutions that provide mental health services, Queen’s is a great place for doctors and residents who like being on the front line and providing help to patients every day.

Once again, I would like to welcome you to our new web site and hope you will enjoy it!
